Milwaukee's 2027 budget is getting a neighborhood-level reality check as city officials ask residents what should make the cut, what needs more money, and what can wait. One public budget open house happened Wednesday, and another is scheduled for Thursday evening at a northwest-side library.
The City of Milwaukee's Budget and Management Division lists the second session for 5 to 7 p.m. today at Atkinson Library, 1960 W. Atkinson Ave., following Wednesday's open house at Zablocki Library, 3501 W. Oklahoma Ave., according to the city's budget calendar. Mayor Cavalier Johnson's office also promoted the meetings in a Facebook post urging residents to help shape the 2027 spending plan.
Milwaukee Is Starting With A $97 Million Budget Gap
The public outreach comes as city officials begin working through a sizable financial hole. Minutes from the Milwaukee Common Council's Finance and Personnel Committee show that a preview of the mayor's proposed 2027 budget identified a projected $97 million gap.
The July 8 discussion included the tax stabilization fund, sales tax projections, a possible vehicle registration fee increase, transportation funding, road investments, green infrastructure, forestry and the potential impact of cuts, according to the Common Council meeting record. That means the choices residents discuss at the libraries could touch both everyday services and the city's longer-term financial stability.
Residents Can Weigh In Before The Formal Proposal
The open houses are part of a broader engagement effort launched through Engage MKE, where residents can provide feedback as Johnson develops his proposed budget. The city's budget engagement page also directs residents toward online participation.
Milwaukee's formal budget calendar continues into the fall: the mayor is scheduled to present the proposed executive budget to the Common Council in September, followed by committee hearings and a public input hearing in October. The Common Council's budget adoption date is set for Friday, November 6, according to the City's 2027 budget calendar.
For residents who want their priorities on the record before those larger hearings begin, Thursday's Atkinson Library session is the remaining in-person opportunity listed for this week's neighborhood meetings. The city says residents can also RSVP or complete the budget survey online through Engage MKE.
