The Martin Luther King Jr. Birth Home on Auburn Avenue is set to welcome visitors again this Saturday, ending months of preservation work and repairs on one of Atlanta's most storied addresses. The Victorian-era house where King was born and spent his early childhood has long been a magnet for visitors to Sweet Auburn, and the reopening brings back on-site interpretation inside the home for the first time since it shut down for renovation.
Reopening details
According to Atlanta News First, the Martin Luther King Jr. Birth Home is scheduled to reopen on Saturday. The outlet notes that King was born in the house in 1929 and lived there until he was 12, making it a rare chance to step directly into the setting of his early years.
Tours and tickets
The National Park Service's reservations page, last updated May 22, still lists the Birth Home as temporarily closed for renovation but spells out how tours will run once they are offered again. Ranger-led presentations are free, tickets must be picked up in person at the visitor center on the day of the presentation, and each presentation is capped at 15 people on a first-come, first-served basis, according to the National Park Service.
Renovation work and park projects
The Birth Home has been under renovation since 2023, with officials expecting a summer reopening, the magazine Garden & Gun reported in January. Along Auburn Avenue, the park has been rolling out a series of preservation projects, including work on the Prince Hall Masonic Temple, which has now been incorporated into the park's interpretation of King’s story, as reported by The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
Why it matters
Built in 1895 and restored to resemble the years when King lived there, the Birth Home is a cornerstone of the Martin Luther King, Jr. National Historical Park and the starting point for many visits, the National Park Service notes. Expect serious crowds over the Independence Day weekend, and check official park channels or contact the visitor center before you head over for the latest details on tour availability and hours.
