A summer camping trip in Gardners turned tragic Saturday evening when a 45-year-old woman and her 11-year-old son were killed after trees came crashing down onto their tent during a violent thunderstorm at Mountain Creek Campground on Pine Grove Road in Cumberland County, the county coroner said. Emergency crews pulled the pair from beneath a downed tree and pronounced them dead at the scene. Their deaths were among several storm-related problems that toppled trees and knocked out power across parts of the region on Independence Day.
According to PennLive, the Cumberland County coroner identified the victims as Pamela Landis, 45, and her son, Andre Landis, 11, and ruled their cause of death as multiple traumatic injuries. The coroner's office was dispatched to the campground shortly before 7:20 p.m., and officials kept the area tightly restricted while crews continued recovery work in rough conditions.
Storms and Damage
The National Weather Service had a severe thunderstorm watch in effect for the Gardners area on Saturday and warned that storms could bring damaging winds as strong cells pushed through the region into the evening. As WGAL reported, local spotters and weather officials said trees came down onto a tent at the campground during that line of storms.
PennDOT and county crews were called in to clear the Route 34/94 corridor after a tangle of downed trees blocked roads and complicated emergency access, the Boiling Springs–Mount Holly Springs edition of the Daily Voice said. Dispatch centers reported multiple injuries in the area, and the campground stayed off-limits while crews worked through the debris and checked for lingering hazards.
Investigation and Local Response
State police and the Cumberland County coroner's office are investigating the deaths, PennLive reported. Dickinson Township officials said power in parts of the area could remain out for several days as utility and public works crews continue repairs and work to clear widespread storm damage.

Officials have emphasized that sudden, damaging winds in severe thunderstorms can take down large limbs and whole trees with little warning, creating life‑threatening conditions for people in tents and other exposed spots, according to the National Weather Service.
