Mustang is pulling the plug on personal fireworks again, closing out its brief holiday exception and warning residents that even keeping leftover firecrackers in the garage could land them in trouble.
On Monday, July 6, 2026, the City of Mustang moved to ban the discharge of consumer fireworks inside city limits, after a short period when officials temporarily relaxed the rules for America’s 250th celebrations. City leaders said the move simply snaps the city back to its usual, stricter policy outside that narrow July window.
As reported by KFOR, the updated ordinance makes it illegal to use consumer fireworks anywhere within Mustang’s boundaries, and it is not just the lighting that can cause problems. Keeping unused fireworks with the intent to set them off later can also be treated as a violation, with municipal citations and fines on the table.
The city’s official fireworks guidance has long allowed consumer fireworks only during a tightly defined holiday period and otherwise prohibits their discharge inside Mustang, according to the City of Mustang. During the permitted hours, officials had directed anyone determined to light legal fireworks to do it at Wild Horse Park instead of in neighborhood streets and driveways.
State Law And Local Authority
The Rockets' Red Glare Act recently reshaped where fireworks can be sold and used across Oklahoma, expanding options at the state level. Even so, cities still control what happens inside their borders. The Oklahoma State Fire Marshal notes that municipalities may regulate or fully ban fireworks within city limits, which is exactly what Mustang is doing.
State guidance also spells out situations where fireworks are off the table everywhere, even in places that normally allow them. Those include county burn bans, sustained winds above 20 miles per hour, low humidity and specific fuel-moisture thresholds that increase fire danger.
Enforcement And Penalties
Local coverage, including reporting by KOCO, notes that anyone caught setting off fireworks in Mustang can be cited or fined, and offending fireworks may be seized and turned over to the county sheriff. Similar rules are in place across several Oklahoma City metro communities that have chosen to keep their fireworks bans even after the statewide legal changes.
Where To See A Legal Show
Residents who still want some sparkle are being nudged toward professional, permitted displays instead of backyard shows. Mustang’s Parks & Recreation page lists the Firefighters Freedom Celebration at Wild Horse Park as an approved community event, according to the City of Mustang Parks & Recreation.
For anyone trying to stay on the right side of the law while still enjoying the holiday glow, city officials point people to the Mustang fireworks information page and the State Fire Marshal’s guidance for the full rundown on what is allowed, where, and when.
