A routine call about an illegal burn under an Interstate 25 bridge in Adams County took a grim turn early Saturday when emergency crews discovered a body in a tunnel near 70th Avenue. Firefighters moved the person out of the smoky passageway before turning the scene over to investigators.
Adams County Fire Rescue said crews were dispatched to the underside of the bridge around 6:30 a.m. for a report of an illegal burn and arrived to find smoke pouring from the tunnel. A search led to the body, which was removed from the area, as reported by The Denver Post. “It’s way too early” to know whether the death is tied to the burn, a department spokesperson said. The Adams County Sheriff’s Office was also on scene assisting fire officials, according to Denver7.
Investigation underway
Detectives from the sheriff’s office, along with the county coroner, are leading the investigation to identify the person and determine the cause and manner of death. As of Saturday, officials had released no additional details about the victim, the fire, or any possible criminal charges while they continued their work at the scene, and authorities are asking anyone with information to contact the Adams County Sheriff’s Office, per The Denver Post.
