A quiet morning today at Findley State Park in Lorain County took a grim turn when visitors discovered a body in the park’s lake and called authorities, state officials said.
The person was found dead around 8 a.m. in Findley Lake at the state park in Wellington, according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR). The agency said the death is under investigation and has not released any information about the victim.
What Officials Said
According to Cleveland 19 News, ODNR spokesperson Andy Chow said people at the park spotted the body in the water around 8 a.m. and called for help. The outlet reported that ODNR is looking into the circumstances of the death and has not yet identified the person publicly.

Findley State Park is located a few miles south of the village of Wellington and surrounds Findley Lake. The park’s official campground map lists its address as 25381 State Route 58, Wellington, Ohio. As noted in the Ohio Department of Natural Resources park map, the property includes boat launches and camping facilities.
Local camping resources describe a small swim beach at the park and a roughly 90-acre lake that is used for boating and fishing, making the water a routine draw for visitors.
State Park Safety
This is not the first water-related death ODNR has handled this season. Earlier in June, the department responded to a drowning at Alum Creek State Park, according to The Columbus Dispatch.
ODNR’s 2025 annual report also stresses the need for caution around the water. The agency highlights a recurring safety message, stating, “It only takes an instant for a drowning to occur,” language used to remind visitors to wear life jackets and stay alert around lakes and other waterways, per the Ohio Department of Natural Resources.
As of now, ODNR has not released additional details about the victim or what led up to the incident at Findley State Park. Officials say the investigation remains ongoing.
