An inmate was found dead inside a cell at the Chesterfield County Detention Center on Friday, according to county officials, setting off a state-led investigation into what happened behind the jail’s walls.
Sheriff Cambo Streater was notified at about 11:39 a.m., and the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division has been asked to take the lead on the probe. Officials said the inmate was being housed alone at the time and have declined to release further details while the state investigation is underway.
According to WSOC, deputies discovered the inmate unresponsive in a single cell and then called in state investigators. The outlet reported that the Chesterfield County Sheriff’s Office is cooperating with SLED and that authorities have not identified the inmate or released a cause of death.

The Chesterfield County Sheriff’s Office confirmed the death in a news release posted to Facebook, stating that the office "will fully cooperate" with the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division. The post also noted that "no further information will be released at this time," leaving both the inmate’s identity and cause of death officially undisclosed.
