Cherokee County residents opened their mail this week to find an official-looking envelope stamped "Election Notice" and "Time Sensitive: Immediate Action Requested." It looked urgent, it looked formal, and, according to county elections officials, it absolutely did not come from their office.
Residents are being told not to act on the mailing.
What Showed Up In Mailboxes
The envelope, which appeared to originate in Alexandria, Virginia, urged recipients to take quick action. Local officials say it was even sent to people who had moved out of Cherokee County, moved out of Georgia altogether, or who are deceased.
Anne Dover, the county's elections director, told The Georgia Sun that "the mailing does not appear to be fraudulent" but confirmed it did not come from her office. She said the county has alerted the State Board of Elections and the Secretary of State’s office about the situation, and that staff started fielding calls about the mailer on Tuesday.
How To Check Your Registration
If one of these envelopes landed in your mailbox, officials say you should not share personal information or follow any instructions printed on it. Instead, verify everything through trusted channels.
You can confirm your voter registration status and polling place at the state’s official portal, My Voter Page. For local help, contact Cherokee County Elections through cherokeegavotes.com or by calling 770-479-0407.
The Secretary of State's 2026 election calendar lists October 5, 2026, as the registration deadline for the November 3 general election, according to the Georgia Secretary of State.
Why Officials Are Sounding The Alarm
Election mail that looks official but is not sent by election offices can easily stir up confusion and anxiety, especially when it comes stamped with words like "time sensitive" and "immediate action." Cherokee County is not alone in seeing this type of material, and officials worry that residents may mistake it for the real thing.
Dover told The Georgia Sun that anyone who is unsure about election-related mail should skip whatever the envelope is telling them to do and check directly with official county or state resources instead.
