Harris County’s long‑planned sheriff’s complex on Navigation Boulevard is finally turning from paperwork into cranes and concrete. The sheriff’s office says work is visibly underway at 5910 Navigation, with a ceremonial groundbreaking locked in for Aug. 17.
A One-Stop Campus For Investigations And Evidence
According to the Harris County Sheriff's Office, the Safety Complex is designed as a one‑stop campus that pulls most of the sheriff’s investigative and evidence work onto a single site. Plans call for a two‑story, 15,000‑square‑foot community center, a three‑story, 76,000‑square‑foot investigations building, a two‑story, 88,500‑square‑foot property and evidence/CSI building, and a 400‑car parking garage. The agency lists the project at 5910 Navigation in Houston’s 77011 ZIP code and notes that it is being funded through capital improvement money.
County records say the goal is to move the Criminal Investigations Bureau out of multiple scattered buildings and into one location, cutting down on the shuffle that comes with evidence processing, crime‑scene work and public‑facing services. In a 2023 memo from the Harris County Commissioners Court, officials put the project’s total estimated cost at $158 million and said the current site work would clear the way for future construction.
Years Of Planning On Navigation
The Navigation site has been in the county’s sights for years, with court actions tied to the project dating back to 2017 and follow‑up approvals in 2020, 2022 and 2023. The Houston Chronicle reported last fall that Harris County had already broken ground on the safety center and said the consolidation should make the work more effective and transparent.
For nearby residents, the big shift will be what ultimately lands on the block: a single spot for investigations, a single spot for evidence operations, a community center for public events and a parking garage sized to keep the whole campus moving. The sheriff’s project page says the complex is expected to wrap up in the fourth quarter of 2027.
