A Jacksonville community is in mourning after a Thursday night crash on I-295 killed a local mother, Dusty Reid, and her 3-year-old son, R.J., when their vehicle left the roadway and caught fire near the Pulaski Road exit, authorities said. The wreck was reported around 10:35 p.m. Neighbors told reporters they rushed out with a garden hose and a fire extinguisher in a desperate attempt to put out the flames but could not reach the occupants. Officials say a 17-year-old has been charged in connection with the crash, and the investigation remains active.
What Happened on the Northside
According to troopers, a black Jeep veered off northbound I-295, struck a tree and burst into flames. Investigators have not yet determined what caused the vehicle to leave the roadway. Neighbors who ran to the scene described frantic rescue efforts that ultimately failed. "RJ had been part of our Impact Learning Center family since he was just an infant," the center said in a statement, as reported by News4JAX.
Fundraiser for the Surviving Children
A GoFundMe created on July 12 to help "The Reid Boys" lists the three surviving sons — Luke, Gage and Cole — and the fundraiser page shows more than $16,000 raised toward a $28,000 goal. The organizer is asking for prayers and financial support to help cover funeral costs and other unexpected expenses, according to the fundraiser page.
Investigation and Charges
Authorities have charged a 17-year-old in connection with the deadly crash, though troopers have not yet released the exact charges or said whether seat belts or a child restraint were in use.
