A 60-year-old woman from Greenwood, Indiana, is facing felony charges after police say she touched off a bomb scare at a downtown Salt Lake City school. Prosecutors allege Daphne Yvonne Lloyd made multiple threats at American Heritage School and claimed to have a bomb, leading to a swift law enforcement response. No explosive device was found, and officers arrested Lloyd after they say she dropped a suitcase and tried to run.
Arrest and alleged threats
On Nov. 6, 2025, Salt Lake City police were called to American Heritage School after a report of a person in a black hoodie carrying a brown bag and a red suitcase who claimed there was a bomb in her suitcase, according to KSL. A teacher told officers that Lloyd approached while the teacher was outside with students and said, "I will kill you and all of the children," before later telling police she had a bomb in her stomach but not in her suitcase, according to the charging documents. Officers say Lloyd then let go of the suitcase, tossed other belongings into the air, and tried to flee. Police chased her down and took her into custody, and reported finding no explosive devices.
Charges under Utah law
In the 3rd District Court, Lloyd is charged with three counts of making a threat against a school, each a third-degree felony under Utah law. The state statute on threats against schools allows judges to order restitution for the costs of responding to such threats, including expenses borne by law enforcement and schools, according to the Utah Code.
School and community response
The Salt Lake campus of American Heritage School is listed at 142 W. 200 North on the school's website. Across the region this year, bomb threats and hoax calls have triggered full campus searches and evacuations. This pattern shows how even false reports can upend a school day and mobilize major safety responses, as seen in a recent hoax bomb call that threw a Bluffdale charter school's morning into chaos, as per Hoodline.
