An Oxford mother is behind bars after Lafayette County deputies say she and her four young children all tested positive for illegal drugs, landing her on four felony counts of child endangerment and a $10,000 bond at the Lafayette County Detention Center.
Arrest and what deputies say
According to WREG, investigators received documentation on July 1 showing that 28-year-old Nydia Hudson and all four of her minor children had tested positive for illegal drugs. Deputies then secured four arrest warrants and picked Hudson up the day after the warrants were issued, the station reports.
State law and possible penalties
Hudson is facing four counts of felony child endangerment under Mississippi law. That charge can apply when a parent is accused of knowingly exposing a child to controlled substances or allowing a child to be present where drugs are used. Mississippi Code §97‑5‑39 allows for criminal penalties in such cases, including possible prison time and fines of up to $10,000, depending on the conduct, according to Mississippi Code §97‑5‑39.
Investigation and next steps
Deputies told WREG that the investigation is still active as prosecutors review the test documentation and youth-services agencies work to coordinate care for the children. Hudson remains held at the Lafayette County Detention Center, which is listed on the county’s website at the Lafayette County Detention Center.
If prosecutors decide to file formal charges, the case will move into the Lafayette County court system. The booking photograph that circulated with local coverage was credited to the Lafayette County Sheriff’s Office, which shares facility information and press releases on its official site at the Lafayette County Sheriff's Office. Deputies say additional details will be released as the inquiry continues.
