Authorities say a Brownsville apartment complex turned into the scene of a violent confrontation Thursday afternoon when a Cincinnati man allegedly used his vehicle to hit another man, leaving the victim with serious injuries and landing the driver in jail on a first-degree assault charge.
Deputies say the clash unfolded at the Green River Apartments on South Main Street around 4:30 p.m., when officers were called to reports of a fight in the parking lot. Witnesses told investigators the victim walked into the lot carrying a chain and was then struck by a vehicle driven by 44-year-old Jonathan Shelton, followed by a separate physical altercation, according to the sheriff's office. As reported by Edmonson Voice, Shelton initially left the scene but later returned to the complex.
Edmonson County EMS transported the injured man from the apartment complex to a nearby hospital, where he is being treated for what officials described as serious injuries. Authorities have not released additional details about his condition.
How the arrest unfolded
After the confrontation at the apartments, deputies broadcast a description of the vehicle involved. A short time later, they stopped a car in the Chalybeate community that matched eyewitness accounts and identified Shelton as the driver, the Edmonson County Sheriff's Office said.
Shelton was taken into custody and charged with assault in the first degree. He was lodged in the Hart County Jail. Investigators have not said whether they expect additional charges in connection with the incident.
Legal context
Under Kentucky law, assault in the first degree applies when a person intentionally causes serious physical injury using a deadly weapon, or acts in a way that creates a grave risk of death and results in serious injury. The statute, classified as a Class B felony, is outlined in Justia. Sentences for Class B felonies in Kentucky typically range from 10 to 20 years in prison, as detailed under FindLaw. Any actual sentence would depend on prosecutorial decisions, possible aggravating factors, and the defendant's prior record.
The Edmonson County Sheriff's Office says the investigation remains active and is asking anyone with additional information about the Brownsville altercation to contact the department. The agency's public contact page lists 270-597-2157 for general inquiries. Officials had not issued further public statements at the time of the initial report.
