
A Sunday crash in downtown Belding turned deadly when a pickup truck slammed into the Covered Village Mall on Main Street, killing an elderly couple and shaking a key piece of the city’s business district.
Authorities said an 88-year-old woman riding in the GMC pickup was pronounced dead at the scene. The 82-year-old man who was driving was taken to a hospital and died the following day. The collision happened on Main Street on Sunday, June 28, 2026, and no other injuries were reported.
According to FOX 17, the Belding Police Department said the truck was traveling westbound on Main Street when it struck the mall. The outlet reports that the passenger was an 88-year-old woman and the driver was an 82-year-old man, and that the driver died from his injuries on Monday. Police told FOX 17 the cause of the crash remains under investigation.
Downtown Mall at Center of the Scene
The Covered Village Mall takes up a substantial stretch of Belding’s Main Street and plays an outsized role in the downtown footprint; the city’s downtown plan notes the mall’s 1970s construction and its central presence in the core. Per the City of Belding, the complex has influenced traffic and redevelopment patterns for decades.

Belding police said investigators are working to determine what caused the vehicle to leave the roadway and strike the building, and they have not released further details.
