A late-night drive on the Eastex Freeway service road ended in tragedy early Saturday when a pickup veered off the pavement, slammed into a concrete pillar and erupted in flames, killing the driver on impact.
The single-vehicle crash happened around 2:05 a.m. in the 15000 block of the Eastex Freeway service road, according to a news release from the Houston Police Department. Investigators say a maroon Dodge Ram pickup left the roadway and struck a concrete pillar, and the force of the collision caused the truck to catch fire. Houston Fire Department paramedics pronounced the driver dead at the scene while HPD's Vehicular Crimes Division began processing the wreckage.
