Pittsburgh International Airport now has a new way to escape travel stress without leaving the terminal. The airport on Wednesday opened the first of four planned outdoor terraces, a 36,000-square-foot garden-like space where travelers, airport workers and the general public can get fresh air, stretch out and watch planes come and go. Best of all, there is no lounge membership or business-class ticket required.
The UPMC Terrace sits on the landside arrivals level near baggage claims 5 through 8, making it accessible before passengers ever reach security. The space is free and open to the public, and Allegheny County Executive Sara Innamorato told TribLIVE that visitors do not need club access or a business-class ticket to use it.
A Garden With A Runway View
The terrace is designed as more than a place to kill time between baggage claim and the curb. According to the airport authority’s Blue Sky News, the project gives travelers, visitors and employees access to fresh air, natural light and views of airport operations, while its landscaping draws from Western Pennsylvania’s woodlands, valleys and meadows.
The UPMC-sponsored terrace includes native plantings, a turf field and electrical outlets near the entrance. The nearly four-year, $1.7 billion terminal project was already aiming to make airport travel feel less like a fluorescent obstacle course, but this is the first amenity that lets passengers simply step outside and breathe.
The airport plans to spend several months evaluating how people use the terrace before deciding what adjustments may be needed, according to the Pittsburgh Business Times. That could mean watching how the space handles peak travel periods, families waiting for arriving passengers, airport employees on breaks and travelers looking for a quiet reset.
More Green Space Is Still On The Way
The remaining three terraces are expected to open during the late summer or fall, with locations planned on both the arrivals and departures levels. The airport’s broader landscape plan also includes the Green Spine, which is scheduled to open next summer and will extend the terminal’s nature-focused design beyond the first terrace, per TribLIVE.
The terrace rollout adds a fresh chapter to the new terminal, which opened in November 2025 with consolidated security, expanded concessions and a design built around nature, technology and community. Hoodline’s earlier look at the facility focused on its local restaurants and high-tech upgrades; now, PIT is giving travelers something increasingly rare in an airport: room to pause before the next boarding announcement.
