Plymouth-based Sargento is reaching beyond the cheese case with a planned acquisition that could give the Wisconsin company a serious new foothold in grocery deli foods. The deal would add dips, spreads, quiches and refrigerated salads to a portfolio best known for sliced, shredded and snack cheeses.
Sargento signed a definitive agreement to acquire California-based La Terra Fina on Thursday, with the transaction targeted to close in late September, according to The Sheboygan Press. The privately held companies did not disclose financial terms, leaving the strategic rationale — rather than the price tag — as the headline takeaway for Sargento and its Plymouth home base.
In a release issued through PR Newswire, Sargento said the purchase would move it into the deli department of grocery retailers nationwide. La Terra Fina was founded in 1983 and operates a roughly 100,000-square-foot facility near San Francisco with about 250 full-time employees, while selling products through supermarkets, club stores and specialty retailers in the United States, Canada and Mexico.
Sargento’s Plymouth Strategy Gets A Wider Grocery Aisle
The acquisition would broaden what Sargento can offer retailers without requiring the Plymouth company to build an entirely new brand from scratch. La Terra Fina already has a lineup ranging from spinach-artichoke dip and quiche to refrigerated salads, giving Sargento an entry into ready-to-eat foods that can sit alongside cheese in the same shopping trip.
That expansion would land inside a company that already reports more than $1.7 billion in net sales and over 2,500 employees. Sargento’s company profile says its headquarters in Plymouth includes corporate offices, manufacturing and trucking operations, while the family-owned business also operates facilities elsewhere in Wisconsin.
Another Acquisition Adds A New Kind Of Food Business
This is not Sargento’s first recent move to grow through acquisition. In 2022, the company announced its purchase of Wisconsin-based Baker Cheese, a string-cheese producer whose 250 employees and St. Cloud manufacturing operation were added to Sargento’s family of businesses, according to Sargento’s acquisition announcement.
The La Terra Fina deal is a bigger category jump than Baker Cheese, even if both transactions fit Sargento’s stated preference for food companies built around quality, innovation and long-term ownership. In practical terms, Plymouth would remain the command center for a company that is becoming less of a single-category cheese specialist and more of a broader refrigerated-food supplier.
What Plymouth And La Terra Fina Workers Still Don’t Know
The announcement does not say whether La Terra Fina’s Union City facility will keep its current structure, whether products will be reformulated or relabeled, or whether the deal will create new positions in Plymouth. It also does not spell out how Sargento plans to combine its sales, manufacturing and research operations with La Terra Fina’s existing business.
For now, the clearest local impact is strategic: a company that has called Plymouth home since 1953 is using its Wisconsin base and national reach to claim more space in the grocery store. The transaction still needs to close, but Sargento’s next chapter may involve considerably more than cheese.
