An early Saturday drive in the Town of Jefferson ended in tragedy when a car left Hoard Road, slammed into a tree and burst into flames, killing the driver. Jefferson County deputies arrived to find the vehicle burning in a roadside ditch and the driver unresponsive in the front seat.
According to Jefferson County deputies, a cellphone crash notification alerted authorities at about 3:30 a.m. from the W6700 block of Hoard Road. Investigators determined the eastbound vehicle left the roadway, traveled through a ditch, then struck a tree, at which point the car ignited. The Fort Atkinson Fire Department extinguished the fire, and the driver was pronounced dead at the scene, a sequence of events first detailed by WMTV.
Investigation underway
The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office Major Accident Investigation Team is leading the probe, with assistance from the Fort Atkinson Fire Department, Jefferson County Emergency Communications and the Jefferson County Medical Examiner’s Office. Officials have not released the driver’s identity or identified a suspected cause of the crash while investigators continue to process the scene. The crash remains under active investigation by county detectives.
