A pre-dawn collision at the intersection of U.S. 290 and Old Kimbro Road in Manor left one person dead and another seriously injured early Friday, shutting down the roadway while first responders worked the scene.
Officers responding to a collision report around 4:37 a.m. found one vehicle stopped in the middle of the highway and another off the road in a fence line, according to CBS Austin. The front-seat passenger in one vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene, while the driver was extricated by Travis County Emergency Services District No. 12 and flown by STAR Flight to a local hospital, where she was listed in stable condition. The driver and passenger in the second vehicle reported no injuries and stayed on site while officers investigated.
Manor police later identified the deceased front passenger as William Ewer of Elgin. The injured driver was identified as Brenda Ewer, also of Elgin, who officials said was freed from the wreck before being airlifted. The driver of the other vehicle, identified as Carlos David Martinez Sanchez, was taken into custody on a charge of driving without a license, according to CBS Austin. "The Manor Police Department extends its deepest condolences to the Ewer family and their loved ones," the department said.
Where the Crash Happened and Why It Matters
U.S. 290 east of downtown has been the site of repeated serious crashes. In April, the Austin Police Department recorded a fatal collision on E. Highway 290, according to a City of Austin release, highlighting ongoing safety concerns on the corridor.
Investigation and Next Steps
Manor police said the cause of Friday’s collision is still under investigation, with multiple local agencies assisting at the scene. The department has not said whether additional charges are expected and is asking anyone with information to contact the Manor Police Department.
