An adult Black man believed to be in his mid-30s was found dead early Tuesday in the roadway at Decatur Street SE and Grant Street SE, on the edge of Atlanta’s Grant Park neighborhood. Officers were called to the intersection around 3:47 a.m., and the man was pronounced dead at the scene. The block remained taped off for hours as crime scene technicians worked the area and detectives canvassed for witnesses.
According to FOX 5 Atlanta, the Atlanta Police Department confirmed the discovery but has not released the victim’s identity or a cause of death. Detectives are expected to pull surveillance video from nearby cameras to piece together what happened before the man was found in the street.
Investigators Seek Help From Neighbors
Homicide detectives have taken over the case and spent the morning going door to door in the area, looking for anyone who heard or saw something or who might have security camera footage from overnight.
The Atlanta Police Department lists its non-emergency number as (404) 658-6666 for tips, and anonymous information can be submitted to Crime Stoppers at 404-577-8477, per the Atlanta Police Department. Investigators say even small details could help them retrace the victim’s final steps.
Holiday Violence Sets Grim Backdrop
The case lands on the heels of a violent Fourth of July stretch in the city. WSB-TV reported that a 16-year-old was found dead days after a July 4 shooting in southwest Atlanta, one of several incidents that have kept homicide detectives juggling multiple investigations.
Atlanta police have not said whether the man’s death near Grant Park is being treated as a homicide and have not identified any suspects. The investigation remains active, and authorities are urging anyone with information to contact APD or Crime Stoppers.
