Three people were wounded early Sunday in a burst of gunfire on Chicago's Near West Side, just a short walk from the United Center. Officers arriving around 2:18 a.m. found a silver car parked on the 100 block of South Honore Street near Adams, riddled with bullet holes, and two women inside.
A 35-year-old woman had been shot in the head and was rushed to Stroger Hospital in critical condition, police said. A 36-year-old woman in the same car suffered a graze wound to the head and was listed in good condition. A 28-year-old man who was nearby was shot in the right leg and got himself to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he was also reported in good condition.
Responding officers placed roughly two dozen evidence markers for shell casings across the scene, according to CBS Chicago. The outlet reported that the car showed "multiple bullet holes" and that no one was in custody as of about 7 a.m. Belmont Area detectives were assigned to handle the case.
Near West Side Context
The latest shooting unfolded just a few blocks from the United Center, a stretch of the Near West Side that has seen its share of serious violence this year. In March, a man was shot and killed steps from the arena, as covered by ABC7 Chicago. The same outlet also reported a fatal shooting on the Near West Side on June 26.
Those incidents, along with the early Sunday attack, add to the string of violent calls investigators are tracking in the district, even in an area better known for packed games and concerts than flashing squad car lights.
Investigation Underway
Belmont Area detectives are reviewing evidence and processing the scene, CBS Chicago reports. Police have not announced any arrests and have not released a suspect description or a possible motive.
The investigation remains active, and authorities are expected to release more information as it becomes available. This story will be updated as new details emerge.
