A deadly early-morning crash on San Antonio's far West Side left a man dead Thursday after a driver spotted what looked like a body in the road and stopped to help.
San Antonio police say officers were called just before 5 a.m. to the 5000 block of Spurs Ranch near U.S. Highway 90, where first responders found a man lying in the roadway. He was pronounced dead at the scene, authorities said.
Police Response
According to KSAT, a preliminary San Antonio Police Department report indicates the passing motorist did not witness the impact itself, but pulled over, tried to assist and called for officers. The victim has not yet been identified, and investigators remained at the site gathering evidence.
The outlet reported that "SAPD said its investigation remains ongoing," as detectives work to reconstruct the crash and determine how the man ended up in the roadway.
Highway 90 And The West Side
The U.S. Highway 90 corridor and nearby West Side streets have been the scene of multiple deadly pedestrian crashes in recent months, fueling louder demands for targeted safety fixes. As reported in Highway 90 Horror, earlier incidents have pushed advocates and officials to call for better lighting, engineering changes and stepped-up enforcement along the most dangerous stretches.
Reporters and safety advocates note that many of these fatal crashes happen in the early-morning hours, often on high-speed segments with limited crossing options for people on foot.
How To Help Investigators
Police are asking for help from anyone who may have seen the collision or who has dash-cam or surveillance footage from the area around the time of the crash.
The City of San Antonio's SAPD contact page explains how to submit tips and footage; per the site, call 210-207-7273 for non-emergencies or Crime Stoppers at 210-224-STOP (7867). Information may also be submitted through the department's online tip services to help investigators piece together what happened.
