WHARTON TOWNSHIP — A weekend ride on a rural stretch of Nelson Road ended in tragedy when a 57-year-old motorcyclist was killed in a single-vehicle crash on Saturday. Emergency crews responded to the two-lane road in Wharton Township and pronounced the rider dead at the scene while state troopers and local first responders stayed on site to document the crash.
The Fayette County coroner has identified the victim as Michael Burnsworth, 57, of Ohiopyle, according to WTAE. The station reports that the crash happened on Nelson Road and that no other vehicles were involved. Officials have not released what they believe caused the collision, and the coroner's office and state police are continuing their investigation, according to the outlet.

Pennsylvania transportation officials say the start of motorcycle season tends to mean more risk on narrow back roads, and they are again urging both riders and drivers to take it slow. In a statewide safety release, PennDOT reported about 2,927 motorcycle-involved crashes and 186 motorcycle fatalities in 2025, and highlighted free motorcycle training along with “share the road” precautions for motorists.
PennDOT's District 12 lists Nelson Road, also known as Route 2015, as a maintained roadway through Wharton Township. The route is one of many narrow, winding roads in Fayette County that carry a good share of the region's motorcycle traffic when the weather turns rideable.

The Fayette County Coroner’s Office oversees death investigations throughout the county and posts contact information and office hours on the county website, which can be found through Fayette County. As reported by WTAE, troopers and local personnel remained on Nelson Road after the crash while investigators collected evidence, and the coroner has not released any additional details about what led up to the fatal wreck.
