A teenage boy was shot Wednesday afternoon near Seattle's Rainier Beach neighborhood and taken to Harborview Medical Center, authorities said, in yet another jolt to a community already on edge over rising violence.
Police say officers arrived around 1:10 p.m. to the area of Rainier Avenue South and South Barton Place after reports of gunfire. They found the teen with a gunshot wound to his side, gave medical aid on the spot, and then had him transported to the hospital. The suspects took off from the scene in an unknown direction and have not been located.
According to FOX 13 Seattle, officers initially responded to calls about shots fired and discovered the boy at that intersection. His current condition has not been released, per the Seattle Police Department.
Police Say Altercation Preceded Shooting
Investigators believe the shooting was not random. Detectives think the victim was involved in a physical altercation with two suspects just before he was shot, according to FOX 13 Seattle.
Officers are still canvassing the neighborhood for the two suspects and any witnesses. Anyone with information is asked to call the Seattle Police Department Violent Crimes Tip Line at (206) 233-5000.
Rainier Beach Context
For Rainier Beach residents, this latest shooting fits into a troubling pattern rather than a one-off scare. Earlier this year, a Jan. 30 bus-stop killing rattled the neighborhood and pushed city leaders to talk more seriously about mentors, jobs, and prevention.
The Seattle Police Department noted in its May 2026 newsletter that reported crimes so far this year are "mostly clustered in Beacon Hill, Rainier Beach, along Rainier Ave S, and along Martin Luther King Junior Way S," underscoring how frequently this area shows up in crime data.
