A routine drive turned tragic in the Raleigh neighborhood of north Memphis on Thursday, July 23, when a man was hit by a car and later died from his injuries, according to authorities. Memphis police said officers found the man at the scene, where he was pronounced dead. The driver involved did not leave, instead staying and cooperating with investigators. Police have not yet released the victim’s name or other identifying details.
Officers were sent to the intersection of Egypt Central Road and Raleigh-Millington Road after a call about the crash, according to FOX13 Memphis. Memphis police told the station the driver remained at the scene as the investigation began. The outlet reported its account was based on statements from on-scene responders and the Memphis Police Department.
Pedestrian collisions remain a persistent problem
Pedestrian crashes have been a stubborn safety issue across Memphis this year. The Memphis Police Department regularly posts about serious wrecks, and local newsrooms have tracked a grim pattern of deadly strikes. In one June case, Action News 5 reported a fatal pedestrian collision in which the driver, as in the Raleigh crash, stayed on scene.
