A gas exposure inside a Rancho Cordova apartment left one person dead Wednesday and sent a 5-year-old child to the hospital. Fire officials said the exposure was accidental, with the child later reported to be doing fine.
Stovetop Gas Exposure Reported At El Mercado Apartments
Crews responded to an apartment complex at 10460 El Mercado Drive, where they found one person dead from what Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District officials described as an accidental gas exposure, according to KCRA 3.
The reported source was gas left on from a stovetop. A 5-year-old was hospitalized after the exposure, but officials said the child was doing fine.
Officials Have Not Identified The Gas As Carbon Monoxide
The initial report does not identify whether carbon monoxide was involved in this particular exposure. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says gas stoves can produce carbon monoxide, an odorless gas that can cause sudden illness and death, and recommends carbon monoxide detectors near sleeping areas.
