A Sunday night fire at a Hillsboro restaurant had the potential to turn into a shopping-center nightmare, but firefighters moved fast to keep it in check. Crews evacuated the one-story commercial building in the Evergreen Parkway shopping center, kept the flames from spreading to neighboring businesses, and reported no injuries. Firefighters remained on scene for roughly an hour to chase down hot spots and complete overhaul before clearing the area.
Department Says Smoke Came From the Roof and Into Ductwork
Per Hillsboro Fire & Rescue, crews were dispatched Sunday after reports of heavy smoke pouring from the roof of a one-story commercial building in the 11100 block of NE Evergreen Parkway. Firefighters found that flames had moved into the space above the ceiling and into the building's ductwork. The department's post notes that crews knocked down the blaze, kept it from spreading to adjacent businesses, and evacuated everyone safely. Tualatin Valley Fire & Rescue, the Hillsboro Police Department, W.C.C.C.A. 9-1-1, AMR Washington County, NW Natural and Portland General assisted with the response, according to the post.
Why Duct and Ceiling Fires Are Especially Risky
Once fire gets into hoods, ductwork and ceiling cavities, it can be both hard to spot and tough to fight, since grease and residues can build up in hidden runs and carry flames away from the cooking surface. The National Fire Protection Association's research shows cooking equipment was the leading cause of structure fires in eating and drinking establishments, accounting for roughly 61% of such incidents during a recent multi-year period, according to the NFPA. That risk helps explain why crews spent extra time on overhaul above the ceiling and inside ductwork to make sure the fire was fully extinguished.
What Officials and Businesses Should Watch
Hillsboro Fire & Rescue and city officials remind business owners to keep hood suppression systems maintained and to schedule professional duct cleaning at intervals that match their cooking volume.
