A Kaiser Permanente employee was killed Monday when a driver fleeing Riverside police struck him near the hospital, authorities said. The driver got away, leaving investigators searching for answers and the victim’s family mourning.
The crash happened around 11:40 a.m. Monday near Kaiser Permanente Riverside Medical Center, according to ABC7 Los Angeles. Police said officers had approached a parked car in a nearby lot because of a vehicle-code violation, but the driver took off as officers walked toward the vehicle. Seconds later, the suspect struck a pedestrian believed to have been on a sidewalk near the medical center.
CBS Los Angeles reported that the victim was rushed into the hospital but later died from his injuries. The Riverside County Sheriff’s Office identified him as 42-year-old Peter Mullis, while Kaiser Permanente said he was one of its employees and expressed condolences to his family, friends and colleagues.
Mullis Was Starting A Family, Widow Says
Mullis’ widow told FOX 11 Los Angeles that the couple had been starting a family. The loss has added a deeply personal dimension to a crash that unfolded just outside the hospital where Mullis worked.
Driver Remains Unidentified
The driver has not been publicly identified, and police had not released a description in the latest reports. The search remained active, with investigators asking anyone who witnessed the crash or may have relevant video to contact Riverside police, ABC7 reported.
