The back-to-school checklist is getting a Clutch City assist. The Houston Rockets and Reliant are bringing a free neighborhood bash to Sunnyside on Friday, with backpacks, school supplies, health services and enough kid-friendly distractions to make the event feel less like a giveaway line and more like a mini festival. Organizers expect to serve up to 1,000 students preparing for the 2026–27 school year.
The fourth annual event runs from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday and will pair school-supply kits with free health and dental checkups, according to Click2Houston. Students can also receive haircuts and visit a nail spa bus, a lineup aimed at tackling several back-to-school errands in one stop.
Backpacks, Basketball And Former Houston Stars
The event is built around more than handing out supplies. The Houston Rockets event listing highlights a basketball clinic, while families can expect inflatables, face painting, snacks and interactive activity stations.
Former Houston basketball standouts Cynthia Cooper and Rafer Alston are also expected to appear, giving students a chance to see some local hoops history up close. As reported by Click2Houston, students will also be able to choose a book to keep from the Curiosity Cruiser mobile library, a literacy project connected to the Barbara Bush Literacy Foundation and Houston Public Library.
Timing Lands Just Before Houston Schools Return
The bash arrives as families make their final preparations before classes resume. Houston ISD says its first day of school is Monday, according to the district’s 2026–27 enrollment information, putting the event squarely in the last-minute stretch for school shopping and appointments.
It is also part of a packed back-to-school weekend across Houston. The city’s Mayor’s Back 2 School & Health Fair is scheduled for Saturday and plans to distribute 20,000 backpacks with supplies alongside dental, vision and mental-health screenings, according to the City of Houston.
