A Roseville man is headed to prison after an argument at a cannabis dispensary escalated into a shooting that left another man wounded but alive. Abel Rivard, 57, was sentenced yesterday in Macomb County for opening fire outside the King of Budz dispensary.
Rivard received two to 30 years for assault with intent to murder, followed by a mandatory consecutive two-year term for felony firearm, according to CBS Detroit. He pleaded no contest to both charges in May 2026, while the victim, a Clinton Township man, survived the shooting.
Argument Moved From Parking Lot Into The Dispensary
The confrontation began on May 23, 2025, in the parking lot of King of Budz in Roseville, then continued inside the business before spilling back outside. Prosecutors said Rivard pulled a gun as the other man returned to his vehicle and shot him, details previously reported by C&G News.
Macomb County prosecutors had sought a sentence of six to 11 years on the assault conviction, but the court imposed the two-to-30-year term plus the firearm penalty. “When someone chooses to use a firearm against another person, they place lives at risk and must be held accountable,” Prosecutor Peter Lucido said in a statement carried by CBS Detroit.
Macomb County Has Seen Other Dispensary Gun Cases
The case is not the first violent dispensary prosecution in Macomb County. In 2024, the Macomb County Prosecutor’s Office announced convictions for two men in a shooting and armed robbery at a Warren cannabis shop.
Why The Firearm Charge Adds Prison Time
Michigan law classifies assaults with intent to commit murder punishable by life in prison or any number of years, according to the Michigan Legislature. A separate felony-firearm conviction carries a two-year term that must be served consecutively and before the sentence for the underlying felony, under state law. That consecutive structure is why Rivard’s sentence includes a separate mandatory firearm term rather than folding the gun charge into the assault sentence.
