What officials say
According to NBC Boston, Westport police and Massachusetts State Police troopers assigned to the Bristol County District Attorney's Office responded to the stretch of Route 6 near the Westport line. The outlet reports that both vehicles were heavily damaged and that Route 6 was shut down westbound at Route 177 and eastbound at Highland Avenue while first responders worked the scene. Officials have not yet released the identities of the victims.
Route 6 corridor known for crashes
Town planning documents, including a May 2026 transportation peer review, cite a 2015 road safety audit of the Route 6 corridor and describe an upcoming MassDOT improvement project aimed at rebuilding problem intersections. That review notes that the Route 6 and Hathaway Road area was flagged for a traffic signal and other changes, funded through the 2026 Transportation Improvement Program, with construction expected to begin in spring 2027. Local officials and planners have repeatedly referenced those studies as the roadmap for cutting down on crashes along the busy east-west route.
Investigation ongoing
Investigators from Westport police and Massachusetts State Police troopers assigned to the Bristol County DA's office are leading the case, NBC Boston reports. Authorities have not released information about the cause of the collision or a timeline for the full reopening of Route 6, and the investigation remains active.
