Route 8 turned into a crime scene Sunday night after a serious multi-vehicle crash in Butler Township brought out the Butler County coroner and a massive emergency response, snarling traffic along a busy stretch of Pittsburgh Road.
Videos from the area show two vehicles that appear heavily damaged and surrounded by first responders. The section of Pittsburgh Road near Decatur Drive was shut down while medics, firefighters and police worked the scene. As of Sunday night, officials had released few details about injuries or what triggered the crash.
According to WPXI, Butler County 911 dispatchers said crews were called to Route 8, between Decatur Drive and Litman Road, just before 7 p.m. The county coroner was requested at the scene. The station reported it was not immediately clear how many people were hurt, but at least two medical helicopters and several ambulances responded. Video shared with Channel 11 shows the wreckage and a heavy emergency presence along the roadway.
Stretch of Route 8 Has a History of Major Closures
Drivers who rely on this portion of Route 8 have seen this movie before, with serious incidents repeatedly shutting the road and forcing long detours. On June 17, a log-truck rollover blocked the highway for hours, according to the Butler Eagle. The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation has also issued closure notices in the past for the segment between Litman Road and McCalmont Road after crashes.
Those prior shutdowns highlight how a single collision on this corridor can quickly ripple into major traffic headaches. PennDOT has warned that motorists should expect delays and seek alternate routes whenever emergency crews are working in the area.
What the Coroner Does and What Happens Next
The involvement of the county coroner signals the most serious level of response. According to the Butler County Coroner's Office, the office responds to accident scenes and conducts medicolegal investigations to determine the cause and manner of death when required.
Officials have not yet released further information about this specific crash. As the investigation moves forward, authorities are expected to process physical evidence from the scene, talk with witnesses and review any available video from nearby cameras or passing drivers.
WPXI reports that it is continuing to seek updates from investigators. Local authorities asked drivers to steer clear of the area while the scene remained active. This story will be updated as police or county officials release more information on the number of people injured or what caused the crash.
