A 70-year-old man from Wilmington, Vermont died Friday after his three-wheeled motorcycle overturned on Route 8A in Heath, turning a quiet midday ride into a fatal solo crash that stunned passing motorists.
According to First Assistant District Attorney Steven Gagne, a passerby spotted the overturned three-wheeler around noon, stopped, and gave first aid while calling 911, as reported by the Greenfield Recorder. The rider was taken to Baystate Franklin Medical Center in Greenfield, where he later died. There was no indication that any other vehicle was involved.
The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner will ultimately determine the official cause and manner of death following standard medicolegal review.
Investigation and Next Steps
The Northwestern District Attorney’s Office, which oversees fatal incidents in Franklin County, is coordinating the response to the crash. Specialists from the Massachusetts State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction unit, described on Mass.gov, routinely respond to serious or fatal crashes to document scenes and analyze vehicle data. Their work, combined with the medical examiner’s findings, will shape the final report on what happened on Route 8A.
The state medical examiner will conduct examinations and certify the cause and manner of death once all testing and reviews are complete, in line with Office of the Chief Medical Examiner procedures.
Dog Survives and Shelter Thanks Residents
The crash did not claim every life involved. The rider’s dog, Louie, a black poodle mix, survived the wreck while outfitted in a helmet and vest harness, according to the Greenfield Recorder. The Friends of the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office Regional Dog Shelter later posted that Louie had been safely captured and added, “Thank you to the family and residents of Heath for your help.”
Rider Safety and What to Know
Massachusetts law requires both motorcycle operators and passengers to wear protective headgear that meets standards set by the Registrar of Motor Vehicles. The requirement extends to all riders, regardless of age or experience.
Anyone with information about the Route 8A crash is asked to contact the Northwestern District Attorney’s Office or Massachusetts State Police as investigators work to piece together the full story behind the fatal rollover.
