A deadly crash on I-279 (Parkway North) outside Pittsburgh shut down the northbound side this afternoon, grinding traffic to a halt and triggering a heavy emergency response. The wreck happened between the Bellevue/West View and Camp Horne Road exits, and the driver of a northbound Lincoln Navigator was pronounced dead at the scene.
What officials said
Pennsylvania State Police told WPXI that a tractor-trailer traveling southbound lost control, crossed the median and the guide rail, and then struck the northbound Lincoln Navigator. Troopers and fire crews stayed on scene as investigators documented the crash and worked to clear the mangled vehicles from the roadway.
Road closures and detours
PennDOT reported that northbound Parkway North was closed between the Bellevue/West View (Exit 7) and Camp Horne Road (Exit 8) interchanges, and said the outbound HOV lanes were also shut. The agency issued a traffic alert on 511PA and urged drivers to use alternate routes while crews and investigators handle the scene.
