Early Friday morning in southwest suburban Burbank, a speeding sedan tore through front yards and into a family’s home, leaving the car crumpled inside the front room and the residents suddenly homeless for the night. The family had been asleep in the back of the house, and despite the chaos, no one inside was hurt. Neighbors later shared security footage of the crash, and police say the driver took off instead of sticking around.
Surveillance Shows Wild Ride Into Front Room
Surveillance video reviewed by FOX 32 Chicago shows the sedan racing south, jumping a curb, slamming into a streetlight and tearing across two front lawns before smashing several parked cars and finally coming to rest inside the house. The homeowner told reporters his family was sleeping in the rear of the home when the car hit. He said he confronted the driver briefly but backed off after smelling gasoline so he could get his relatives out. Police told reporters the driver fled the scene after the crash.
Crash Near 82nd And Mason Shakes Quiet Block
CBS News Chicago reported the crash happened near 82nd Street and Mason Avenue, with emergency crews arriving early Friday. That report also noted unconfirmed accounts of a possible natural gas leak at the damaged home. Officials have not released the driver’s identity, and the investigation is still underway.
Family Displaced As Crews Declare Home Unsafe
The impact blew a gaping hole in the front of the house and wrecked at least two parked vehicles. Crews later boarded up the opening and posted warnings that the structure was unsafe. The family lost gas, power and water service while inspectors and utility workers moved in to secure the scene. Police said the driver took off after the crash, but investigators may be able to track the suspect using the abandoned sedan, which still had both license plates attached, according to FOX 32 Chicago.
