A nearly 11-year-old South Sacramento murder case has produced an arrest, with homicide detectives identifying Ignacio Navarrete as the suspected shooter in the 2015 killing of 22-year-old Octavio Rodriguez.
Navarrete was located and arrested in Sacramento County last Thursday after investigators revisited the case in 2025, according to the Sheriff's announcement. He was booked into Sacramento County Main Jail on an outstanding murder warrant.
What Happened In South Sacramento
At about 9:30 p.m. on Dec. 2, 2015, someone called authorities after hearing several gunshots and a person yelling that someone had been shot. Rodriguez was found suffering from a gunshot wound and was pronounced dead at the scene, while a contemporaneous SN&R report identified him as a 22-year-old South Sacramento victim.
The case remained unsolved for years before sheriff's homicide detectives re-examined it in 2025. Officials have not publicly detailed the evidence that led investigators to Navarrete or identified a motive for the shooting.
A Familiar Sacramento Cold-Case Pattern
The arrest follows another delayed homicide breakthrough in the Sacramento area. In 2024, Sacramento police arrested Robert Terry in the 1980 stabbing death of Helen Terry after revisiting the case and processing evidence, KCRA reported.
The Sacramento County Sheriff's Office says its Homicide Bureau investigates cold-case homicides in unincorporated county areas and Rancho Cordova, while its public cold-case archive documents older investigations and seeks information from the public. That work helps explain how long-dormant cases can return to active scrutiny, although investigators have not described the specific breakthrough in Rodriguez's case.
What The Arrest Means Legally
Navarrete remained ineligible for bail under his booking status, according to the sheriff's booking update. An arrest warrant is an allegation, and Navarrete is presumed innocent unless prosecutors prove the murder charge in court.
The sheriff's announcement did not include a court date or additional details about the case. For now, the arrest marks the first public breakthrough in a South Sacramento homicide that had remained open since December 2015.
