Mother Says Thief Targeted Car With Deep Meaning
According to CBS Sacramento, Deborah Grimes said the SUV belonged to her son Gregory “Najee” Grimes and that she created a crime-victim support foundation in his memory. She told the station the SUV was first stolen, then later recovered when a suspect was caught driving it. Auto-theft charges were initially dropped by the district attorney’s office, she said, after prosecutors cited a lack of evidence.
Grimes told the outlet that what haunted her most was knowing the vehicle held a necklace containing some of her son’s ashes at the time. “All I was thinking of was someone riding around with my son’s ashes,” she said. Since then, she has installed a driveway camera and said she plans to brand the SUV with her foundation’s logos in hopes of scaring off any future thieves.
