Sacramento-based Storage Star just pulled off the kind of expansion that turns a regional player into a national contender, more than doubling its footprint after closing a 59-property portfolio across 13 states earlier this month. The purchase pushes the young operator well beyond its West Coast roots and into a number of eastern U.S. markets.
The deal in brief
According to the Sacramento Business Journal, the 59-property acquisition closed escrow earlier this month and spans 13 states. The portfolio effectively doubled Storage Star's holdings and ranks as one of the company's largest single transactions to date, a major leap for an operator that has been building its presence largely out of Sacramento.
A transformational quarter
Industry coverage and the company's own messaging point to a breakneck pace of deal-making behind the headline purchase. Inside Self-Storage reports that Storage Star completed more than 60 purchases in the second quarter, pushing its portfolio into triple-digit territory. CEO Matt Garibaldi described the period as "a transformational moment" as the operator moved into new regions, underscoring just how fast the company has shifted from regional to broadly national scope.
How the operator will integrate the properties
The rapid growth is not just about collecting properties. Storage Star says it brought the newly acquired facilities onto a single management platform in one coordinated launch, according to a vendor write-up, which allows for centralized billing, reservations and reporting. Self Storage Manager notes that 60 sites were migrated to its cloud platform in a single day, a move Storage Star credited with smoothing the operational scale-up and helping the company keep control of the sprawling new portfolio.
Market context
The timing of Storage Star's buying binge comes as the self-storage sector navigates a mixed backdrop. Yardi Matrix data shows advertised rents were under pressure in 2026 even as capital remained available for experienced operators. Yardi also points to elevated construction in some Sun Belt markets that could weigh on pricing, a combination that has many portfolio-scale operators moving quickly to consolidate assets while conditions are still favorable.
Why it matters here
For Sacramento, the expansion puts a brighter spotlight on a hometown firm that now has reach far beyond the region. The move raises Storage Star's profile locally and signals more management and support work flowing through its home base as the company integrates dozens of eastern facilities. According to Storage Star's website, the company lists a principal office in Sacramento and is planning capital improvements and technology upgrades at the new sites, steps that could translate into short-term contract work and longer-term manager roles as the build-out continues.
