Less than a month before Wisconsin Democrats head to the polls, Lt. Gov. Sara Rodriguez has fired her campaign manager, Kara Spencer, after an internal review flagged what the campaign called "serious mismanagement and inaccuracies" in its campaign finance reports. The campaign says it plans to contact the Wisconsin Ethics Commission to fix the filings and bring everything into compliance. The shakeup lands just ahead of the August 11 Democratic primary.
What the campaign says
In a statement released Sunday night, the Rodriguez campaign said an internal review uncovered inaccurate and incomplete campaign finance reports and that Spencer had been terminated as a result. "The moment Sara learned of these inaccuracies, she acted swiftly and decisively removed her," the campaign said, according to WTMJ. The statement did not spell out exactly what was wrong in the filings or indicate whether any money is missing.
Why timing matters
The staffing shakeup comes at a delicate point in the statewide race. The August 11 Democratic primary is closing in, early voting is ramping up, and both donors and rivals are watching every move. Local coverage has highlighted how a crowded field and the early voting calendar make campaign reporting and compliance issues more visible to voters and opponents, as FOX6 Milwaukee reported. Even if mistakes are corrected, sloppy or late filings can quickly turn into political baggage.
What comes next
Rodriguez's campaign says it will now work with state officials to clean up the reports and keep its focus on the race ahead. "The campaign will continue to build support to win in August and beat Tom Tiffany in November," the campaign said, per WTMJ. According to the commission's guidance, Wisconsin Ethics Commission staff can notify campaigns of errors in their reports and request corrections. If committees fix problems promptly, staff typically close out audits. More serious or intentional violations, however, can trigger a formal investigation or lead to a settlement.
