A Little Shady, a spinoff from the team behind Austin's long-running Shady Grove, is set to open for lunch on August 4 in Kyle. The fast-casual spot is promising a “greatest hits” lineup of Shady Grove staples, including green chile cheese fries, the Hippie Chick sandwich and frozen “Shady Thang” margaritas, served in a roomier indoor-outdoor setup.
According to CultureMap Austin, the restaurant will open at 5172 S. FM 1626 and aims to capture the laid-back spirit of the Barton Springs original while adapting it to a suburban retail setting. The outlet notes the site sits behind a Panera Bread and across from a Nothing Bundt Cakes along the growing FM 1626 corridor.
General manager John Hodson told CultureMap Austin, “We're gonna do a Greatest Hits Shady Grove menu to start, and cooking everything here, scratch in-house.” The piece adds that Hodson and the team have been sharing construction and menu teases on the restaurant's social channels since January.
Owner Rusty Zagst, who began as a busboy at Shady Grove in 1993 and became the restaurant's managing partner in 2009, is leading the project, Community Impact reports. The original Shady Grove closed in May 2020 and its Barton Springs Road building at 1624 Barton Springs still sits vacant, according to MySA.
What's on the menu
Per the restaurant's own site, A Little Shady will launch with a “Greatest Hits” menu that leans on burgers, green chile cheese fries, grilled wings, chicken-fried chicken and frozen “Shady Thangs.” Longtime Shady Grove items like the Hippie Chick sandwich and tortilla-fried queso catfish have already been highly requested by fans.
Where it sits
The Kyle location trades the original's pecan-shaded patio for a suburban commercial center on FM 1626 but keeps rustic stonework and a nod to the restaurant's live-music past. Local planning coverage notes the project won approvals and includes an approximately 4,200-square-foot covered patio as part of the build, Kyle Economic Development reports.
Old Grove's future
The former Shady Grove building at 1624 Barton Springs Road remains empty and has drawn redevelopment concepts that would need to account for the property's mature pecan trees and city arborist review. For now, A Little Shady offers fans a chance to reconnect with old menu favorites in a new setting while the fate of the Barton Springs site stays unresolved, TOWERS reports.
