Crash details from state police
According to MLive, the car was heading north on South Oceana Drive when the driver lost control and hit a utility pole south of West Buchanan Road. The impact was violent enough that both men were thrown from the vehicle, investigators said.
"Both occupants were ejected from the vehicle," state police told MLive. Troopers said the driver, a 22-year-old man, died at the scene. The passenger, a 40-year-old man, was taken to a hospital with serious injuries.
Investigation under way
Michigan State Police troopers are leading the investigation into what caused the crash, and officials have not yet released the victims' names. The Oceana County Sheriff's Office, the Shelby-Benona Fire Department, and Life EMS all responded to the scene, according to initial reports.
Local context
The wreck comes just days after another deadly crash in Shelby Township, adding to what has been a tough week on local roads. The Oceana County Press recently detailed a separate fatal collision that also brought out area fire crews and Life EMS.
