A stretch of Downtown Crossing at the edge of Boston Common turned into a crime scene Thursday night when a man was shot on Tremont Street. Boston police said his injuries were considered non-life-threatening, and he was taken to a nearby hospital as detectives began combing the area for evidence.
Police give initial details
According to NBC10 Boston, officers responded shortly before 10:30 p.m. to the 100 block of Tremont Street near Temple Place, right by Boston Common. They found a male victim suffering from a gunshot wound, and Boston EMS transported him to an area hospital with injuries believed to be non-life-threatening. No arrests had been announced as detectives continued their investigation late into the night.
Not the first downtown shooting this month
The Boston Globe reported that on June 30 three people were shot in the Theater District at the intersection of Tremont and Stuart Street, another case in which victims survived with non-life-threatening injuries. According to that report, police asked anyone with information on that earlier shooting to contact detectives at 617-343-4571 or to submit tips through CrimeStoppers.
Citywide context and response
The Downtown Crossing shooting follows a violent Fourth of July weekend in which at least 13 people were shot across the city, NBC10 Boston reported, prompting city leaders to reiterate their focus on violence-prevention work. Officials have said they are paying close attention to patterns of violence and directing resources to neighborhoods during busy summer weekends.
