A dog-sitting arrangement in Sonora ended in tragedy this week when a pet left in the care of a local man was found dead inside a dumpster. Police arrested 33-year-old Lukas William Clark on suspicion of felony animal cruelty causing death and booked him into the Tuolumne County Jail, authorities said.
Officers were called to Pesce Way just before 7 PM on Monday after someone reported discovering the dog in a dumpster. Investigators say witness statements and other evidence indicate the animal was killed on Sunday and its body was placed in the dumpster around 3 AM, according to CBS Sacramento. Police say the dog had been left in Clark’s care while the owner was away receiving extended medical treatment. Sonora officers later located Clark on West Jackson Street and arrested him without incident.
Investigation underway
Detectives with the Sonora Police Department are still gathering evidence and interviewing witnesses as the case moves forward. Officials are asking anyone who saw activity in the Pesce Way area on Sunday, or who has relevant video, to contact the department.
What the charge could mean
Under state law, maliciously and intentionally maiming, torturing or killing an animal can be prosecuted as a felony or a misdemeanor; a felony conviction can carry a county jail term and fines up to $20,000, and convictions may include forfeiture of animals and restitution, per California Penal Code §597. How prosecutors ultimately charge the case will depend on what investigators develop and on the Tuolumne County District Attorney’s review.
