Officers answering a call about a stolen vehicle on Sedgefield Drive discovered the teen at the scene and determined he had been shot. Highway Patrol troopers and Charlotte‑Mecklenburg Police worked a related scene along Interstate 77 near the Tyvola Road interchange as investigators tried to piece together what happened.
According to WSOC, the incident started as a call about a stolen car on Sedgefield Drive, where officers then found the 17‑year‑old with a gunshot wound. Tyvola Corridor And Citywide Trends
The section around Tyvola Road has seen other late‑night gunfire in recent months. On May 30, a separate shooting left a woman hospitalized after a Tesla ride turned violent along the same corridor.

The Charlotte‑Mecklenburg Police Department’s midyear briefing shows vehicle thefts are down 31% in the first half of 2026 compared with the same stretch last year, although officials warn that juvenile offenders and specific hot spots are still driving some of the remaining cases, according to CMPD.
