A late-night fireworks hangout in South Dallas turned into a crime scene early today when a drive-by shootout on South Malcolm X Boulevard left two women wounded and the street littered with shell casings.
Dallas police said the gunfire erupted along the 4600 block of South Malcolm X Boulevard, where officers later counted more than 60 spent shell casings. The roadway was shut down for hours as crime-scene units documented evidence.
Both women were taken for medical treatment, and one had been shot in the leg. The shooters took off in a white SUV and had not been found.
What Investigators Say
According to police, the first 911 calls came in around 1:40 a.m. A group of teenagers and young adults had gathered near the 24-Hour Food Mart to light fireworks when an argument broke out.
Investigators told reporters that a gun was allegedly fired during that dispute. Minutes later, suspects returned in a white SUV and opened fire while driving past the crowd, turning the block into a shooting scene. Crime-scene teams recovered more than five dozen shell casings, according to FOX 4 Dallas-Fort Worth.
Not The First Time On This Block
Neighbors along this stretch of Malcolm X Boulevard have seen gunfire before. In 2017, a shootout outside a convenience store in the 4600 block left two bystanders wounded, according to The Dallas Morning News.
Holiday Crowds And Fireworks As A Backdrop
The latest violence unfolded during the Independence Day period, when fireworks, large gatherings and late-night crowds often pack North Texas streets.
Nearby Fort Worth also saw holiday trouble this season when a confrontation that began as an argument at a large gathering turned deadly, according to AOL.
Investigation Ongoing
As of this morning, police had not announced any arrests, and the suspects remained at large, per FOX 4 Dallas-Fort Worth.
Detectives processed the scene and the investigation remains active.
