
Yesterday's collision at Monterey Road and Ford Road in south San Jose left a pedestrian dead and shut down a stretch of the major corridor for hours, police said. Officers pronounced the person dead at the scene, while investigators blocked northbound Monterey Road at Ford Road as they worked. The driver stayed at the scene and was later taken to a nearby hospital with injuries described by police as non-life-threatening.

San José Police Media Relations said in a post on X that officers were dispatched after a call at about 7:38 PM, and that the pedestrian was pronounced deceased at the scene. According to the post, the driver remained at the scene, was taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, and road closures would remain in place for several hours while investigators worked.
Units are currently in the area of Monterey Road and Ford Road investigating a vehicle collision involving a pedestrian. The pedestrian succumbed to their injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Monterey Road Safety Work
The collision happened on a segment of Monterey Road that the city has already flagged as a high-injury corridor and a priority for safety and transit improvements, according to the City of San José. The Monterey Road Transit Project calls for measures such as dedicated bus lanes, upgraded crosswalks and protected bike lanes to improve safety and transit reliability. Design work is advancing toward construction, pending funding and continued community engagement, the city notes.

Efforts like Vision Zero have coincided with a recent drop in overall traffic deaths, although pedestrian fatalities remain a stubborn problem in the city, according to San José Spotlight. Monterey Road has seen multiple deadly collisions in recent years, including earlier pedestrian deaths that pushed the city’s tally higher, such as the 30th traffic fatality of the year documented along the corridor.
