A pre-dawn crossing on one of south St. Louis' busiest corridors turned fatal early Saturday when a woman was struck and killed while crossing Gravois Road near Ohio Avenue, police said. The crash happened about 2:45 a.m., and emergency crews pronounced the pedestrian dead at the scene. Police have not released the woman's identity or age.
According to First Alert 4, the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department said the woman was walking across Gravois and was not in a crosswalk when she was struck. Police told the outlet that the vehicle involved remained at the scene and that the department's Accident Reconstruction Unit responded to investigate. Officials told First Alert 4 that details were limited and the investigation is ongoing.
Gravois corridor has long safety concerns
The stretch of Route 30 that runs through the city, commonly called Gravois, has drawn repeated concern from residents and local leaders over pedestrian safety. A recent fed-up neighbors blast slow fix account summarized a Missouri Department of Transportation review that found multiple fatalities along the corridor, prompting neighborhood calls for quicker safety fixes. Residents at public meetings have urged short-term "quick-build" countermeasures while the longer planning process moves forward.
MoDOT study, timeline and quick builds
MoDOT's Route 30 project page says the department is running an in-depth planning study that will continue through late 2027 and is evaluating options such as lane reductions, simplified intersections and enhanced crossings. The project page also notes that any full resurfacing and major construction is not expected to begin until fall 2029, though officials say pilot "quick-build" measures could be installed sooner. Project boards and a June 2026 newsletter with more detail are available on MoDOT's site.
Police have not released additional details about the crash. First Alert 4 described the case as developing and said it will update coverage as investigators learn more.
