Sterlingfest, the city’s free three-day arts-and-music blowout, is back this week, turning Dodge Park and the Sterling Heights City Center into what amounts to a summer family reunion with better lighting and more guitar solos. Multiple stages, a juried art fair and a tightly packed restaurant row are all crammed into a walkable loop that many locals treat as an annual roll call. From tomorrow through Saturday, the schedule mixes tribute acts, classic-rock favorites and a country-heavy Friday night built to pull in crowds from across Metro Detroit.
Headliners, drone show and schedule
According to the City of Sterling Heights, the AT&T Main Stage kicks off Thursday with tribute sets to Gwen Stefani and Bruno Mars, capped with a drone show lighting up the park. On Friday, the stage turns over to Julianne Ankley, followed by country star Gretchen Wilson, and Saturday closes out with Slaughter joined by Great White. The city’s announcement puts most main-stage sets in the early evening and notes that the festival layout has been reworked this year to improve pedestrian flow and public-safety access. Most of the action, including concerts, the Art Fair and kids’ entertainment, is free to enter.
A hometown homecoming
Melanie Davis, the city’s community relations director, told the Detroit Free Press that Sterlingfest has become a homecoming of sorts where neighbors, former classmates and long-lost acquaintances seem to resurface all at once. The paper reports that organizers expect roughly 150,000 visitors over the three-day run, which helps explain why the Suds 'n' Sounds pavilion has turned into the unofficial late-night reunion spot for local crews.
Art fair, kids' tent and food
The juried Art Fair is set to showcase more than 100 artists selling jewelry, paintings and a spread of family-friendly crafts, according to festival materials. Younger visitors get their own hub at the Genisys Credit Union Kids Tent, with daily face painting, karaoke and live shows on the schedule. Restaurant Row lines up local eateries alongside dozens of food trucks, offering the kind of roaming dinner situation that rewards a strong appetite and comfortable shoes. 99.5 WYCD notes that Friday includes a station takeover, with Gretchen Wilson hitting the main stage at 8 p.m. Organizers have also scattered misting stations and first-aid tents around the grounds to help keep festivalgoers standing through the summer heat.
Road closures and getting there
The city’s advisory says Utica Road and sections of Dodge Park will be closed for setup and teardown, while several nearby streets will see one-sided parking restrictions. Shuttle service and designated ride-hail lots are in place to cut down on traffic jams. Drivers are encouraged to use 17 Mile Road as an alternate east-west route and to follow posted detours and residential parking rules to avoid tickets or a surprise tow. If you are heading in for evening headliners, plan to arrive early, take advantage of official shuttles where available and build extra time into your drive.
