Two 17-year-olds are in custody after deputies say a stolen car run from Largo turned into a soggy endgame on the Manatee River. The teens allegedly ditched the ride, tried to swim for it, and wound up plucked from the water and booked into jail. One of them started struggling mid-river and had to be rescued before being taken into custody. Aviation and K-9 units helped track the pair while North River Fire Department and Manatee Search and Rescue handled the water-side takedown.
Aerial Unit Tracked Teens From Sonic To The Shoreline
The Manatee County Sheriff’s Office said deputies were alerted after a white Toyota Camry, reported stolen by the Largo Police Department, was spotted in the 8300 block of U.S. 301 and then found in the parking lot of a Sonic along that stretch of highway, according to the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office. Deputies attempted a traffic stop, but said the driver crossed a concrete median into a nearby neighborhood. No vehicle pursuit was initiated. The Camry was later located abandoned on 80th Avenue East while aviation crews and K-9 teams set up a perimeter.
Water Rescue And River Arrests
Local reporting states the aviation unit kept both suspects in sight as they ran toward the Manatee River and went into the water, where deputies watching from above saw one of the juveniles begin to struggle. Using a small boat offered by a nearby resident, deputies pulled the struggling teen from the water and took him into custody, preventing what authorities described as a possible drowning. The aviation crew continued to track the second suspect until North River Fire Department personnel ferried a deputy by boat to his position on the river for an arrest, as reported by IONTB.
Confession And Charges
Investigators said one of the juveniles later confessed to stealing the Toyota Camry in Largo and to committing multiple vehicle burglaries in that city. Both teens were booked on counts that include possession of a stolen vehicle, fleeing to elude, trespassing in a conveyance, and resisting an officer without violence, according to the sheriff’s Facebook post. Authorities added that additional charges may be filed by the Largo Police Department as detectives continue their work.
