
A 63-year-old man was killed in a hit-and-run early Sunday after he was struck while crossing Sumner Road SE in Southeast Washington, leaving neighbors and investigators searching for answers. The collision happened in the 1200 block of Sumner Road, and police say the vehicle that hit him took off before officers arrived. Emergency crews rushed the man to a hospital, where he later died.
According to the Metropolitan Police Department, Seventh District officers responded around 12:27 a.m. and found an adult male suffering from critical injuries. DC Fire and EMS took him to a local hospital. The man was later identified as 63-year-old Ricky Marshall. Investigators say a yet-unidentified vehicle traveling eastbound on Sumner Road struck Marshall as he crossed the street, then fled the scene. MPD’s Major Crash Investigations Unit is handling the case.
Police Seek Witnesses And Footage
DC News Now first reported the incident and noted that detectives are asking for the public’s help. Anyone with information, video, or tips is urged to call police at (202) 727-9099 or text 50411. Investigators have not released a description of the striking vehicle and say they are canvassing the neighborhood and reviewing nearby surveillance and dashcam footage. Witnesses or anyone who may have captured the crash on video are asked to contact authorities.

The deadly crash unfolded in the Barry Farm section of Ward 8, a residential neighborhood south of the Anacostia River that includes community facilities along Sumner Road, according to the Barry Farm redevelopment site. The 1200 block sits near local recreation spaces and mixed-use housing that have been part of redevelopment efforts in recent years. Investigators continue to knock on doors and search for surveillance footage in the surrounding area as they work to identify the vehicle and driver involved.
